Conversions – what are they and why are they so important? You’ve probably heard the term before, but were unclear as to why the concept is so important when it comes to e-commerce. Well, if you can close your eyes and think of your online store like a brick-and-mortar storefront – what could you do to attract customers? How can you design your store to turn visits into actual sales? The process of attracting visitors and turning those visitors into sales is the process of conversion. In most cases, conversion is measured by a percentage rate. So, the whole idea is to get as many people in your store to then increase the conversion rate. Here are five conversion-centered web design tips.
- Make the information easy to focus on. Many times, conversion rates are low because the website has too much going on. For instance, if you have a link to your online store, but there are a bunch of flashing graphics and animations around the link, you may confuse the person visiting your website. However, if you have a clean space and you make the direction very clear, you can hugely increase click rates and conversion rates.
- Make sure that the website has light graphics and animations. When a visitor gets to your website, you want the pages to turn and load quickly – almost instantaneously. If your visitor has an old browser and has to wait for the page to load, you could lose out on a lot of sales. So, make sure that the page visitors land on – the landing page – is light and straightforward. When it comes to conversion-centered web design, this is one of the most important things to remember.
- Make sure to capture a visitor’s attention. Without video or flashy animation, you can still very easily capture a web visitor’s attention. The idea is to get the visitor to stay on your website. After you have grabbed their attention, it is pretty much smooth sailing from there. So, you want to think about the image you choose for the homepage – sometimes a nice clean image can work – you could also include an interesting tag line or slogan too. - Make sure that direction is clear. In order to make sure that direction is clear, you need to have a hierarchy. For instance, if you want a person to click on a certain page, the direction should be the focus. You can use arrows, emboldened text, or any other method to illustrate where the visitor should go. Without clear direction, the visitor will mostly likely leave your site.
- Make sure to target your landing page. If you are utilizing a link based, or banner based, marketing and advertising methodologies, you may want to have custom landing pages that people visit. This is especially important if you have different styles of advertisements that attract different kinds of people. Ideally, you want to target unique demographics. In the end, the more your site appeals to everyone, the greater your conversion rate will be.
